Background

What is The UWA Law Review?

The University of Western Australia Law Review, first published in 1948, has the distinction of being among Australia’s oldest and most significant legal periodicals.  It is published twice each year and provides a forum for the airing of topical issues in law.  Articles on topics of current legal significance and practical Notes on Australian case and statute law are published. Contributions are drawn from leading local, interstate and international academics and practitioners.

Who runs The Law Review?

Since 1988, the production of The Review has been carried out by a Student Editorial Board under the supervision and guidance of the Staff Editor. This year the staff editor is George Syrota and the student editorial board comprises of seven students.

What does the Student Editorial Board do?

The Board is responsible for the solicitation of articles and book reviews from academics and legal professionals throughout Australia and the world; the editing and research work necessary to transform submitted manuscripts into a publishable form; and assisting in subscription and advertising drives.

Do I get any credit for my work as a Law Review editor?

Satisfactory service as a member of the Student Editorial Board will result in your being credited with a pass in the 6-point unit LAWS:4356.  Your work and service as an editor will be acknowledged in the current year's issue of The Review and you will be entitled to note such experience on your curriculum vitae.

How do I apply for student editorship?

Apply on-line before 28 November 2008.

Assessment will be on the basis of interest and particular skills.  Academic merit is only one of a number of considerations that will be taken into account when making a selection.

Is there anything else I should know about The Law Review?

The duty statement describes the role of an editor. Editors will be encouraged to familiarise themselves with all the facilities of The Review, such as computer skills, voice mail and photocopying machines.

Whom do I contact if I have any more questions?

If you have any queries feel free to ring the Administrative Assistant (Cheryl MacFarlane) at The Law Review office on Monday or Thursday (phone 6488 2478); if the phone is unattended you should leave a message on the answering machine.
